Mona May releases book on Clueless fashion for 30th anniversary

Costume designer Mona May has launched her new book, The Fashion of Clueless, to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 film. The illustrated volume explores the creation of the movie's iconic wardrobes, featuring sketches, photos, and interviews with stars like Alicia Silverstone. May reflects on the film's lasting cultural impact and the challenges of recreating its looks today.

Book Overview

The Fashion of Clueless, published by Insight Editions for $28.99 in hardcover, delves into the wardrobe of Cher Horowitz, including the famous yellow plaid Jean Paul Gaultier suit and Dionne's hats. It includes never-before-seen sketches, behind-the-scenes images, and insights from May, alongside interviews with Alicia Silverstone and director Amy Heckerling. The book's design mirrors the film's chic aesthetic, with detailed fabric and raised graphics.

Reflections on Production and Legacy

May describes the book project as a way to reconnect with the cast after years apart, evoking fond memories. She recalls Paul Rudd wearing his own jeans and shoes early on and credits the film as a launchpad for the young ensemble, including herself, Rudd, Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, and Donald Faison. 'We were so young when we made the movie... it put us on the map, all of us,' May said.

The designer praises her partnership with Heckerling, who gave her creative freedom: 'Amy truly took the genie out of the bottle and allowed me to be this creative person.' She highlights the film's enduring appeal through nostalgia for 'innocence... femininity, the girliness, the friendship,' and timeless, globally inspired fashion drawing from Sophia Loren and Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Cultural Milestones and Challenges

Clueless faced studio rejections before Paramount, under Sherry Lansing and Scott Rudin, greenlit it. At Vogue World 2025 in Los Angeles' Paramount Studios, recreations of Cher and Dionne's outfits walked the runway, designed by Vivienne Westwood and Tom Browne since originals are lost. May called it an 'emotional moment,' noting the hats survived but fabrics disintegrated over time.

Future of Costume Design

May views AI as advancing but insufficient for human elements like taste, proportion, and emotional nuance. 'I don’t think that AI will have the level of taste that I have,' she said, emphasizing artistry's role in quality work. She stays inspired through travel to Berlin, London, New York, and street fashion observation.

May's other credits include Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Never Been Kissed, Enchanted, and The Wedding Singer.
