Mumbai to implement GRAP-IV curbs in areas with high AQI

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced plans to enforce GRAP Stage IV restrictions in Mumbai if air quality exceeds an AQI of 200 for three consecutive days in specific areas. These measures aim to curb rising pollution levels. Construction sites will face closure under these curbs.

On December 1, 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) revealed its strategy to tackle air pollution in Mumbai by activating the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage IV. This severe stage will apply to pockets of the city where the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpasses 200 for three straight days.

GRAP-IV includes stringent actions such as shutting down construction sites to reduce dust and emissions, as outlined by the BMC. The decision follows monitoring by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which tracks Mumbai's air quality amid concerns over construction dust and other pollutants.

The announcement highlights ongoing efforts to manage urban pollution in India's financial capital. BMC officials emphasized that these localized restrictions will help improve air quality without citywide disruption. No specific areas were named in the initial statement, but implementation will target breaching zones promptly.

This move aligns with national guidelines for pollution control, particularly during winter when AQI often worsens. Residents and industries are urged to comply to support cleaner air.
