Nanny attacked with baseball bat in Sugar Land while protecting toddler

A woman was beaten with a baseball bat in Sugar Land, Texas, while walking with a toddler she was nannying last week. The suspect remains at large.

The attack happened around 10 a.m. on Friday on Fluor Daniel Drive. The woman, identified by her husband Dannel Caban, was pushing a 2-year-old in a stroller when a man in an SUV stopped to ask for directions before exiting the vehicle with a bat.

She tried to run and protect the child but was struck multiple times on the head and arms. The suspect broke her phone as she attempted to call 911 and shattered bones in her forearm when she raised it to block a blow.

The toddler was unharmed. The woman suffered injuries to her head, arms, and hands and is expected to remain hospitalized until near the end of the week, with a full recovery taking five to six months.

Police describe the suspect as a man in his 30s or 40s, tall and heavier set, who fled in an older-model SUV. The motive is unknown and investigators are checking for surveillance footage.
