Nintendo Switch Online adds four classic games and boot-up Easter egg

Nintendo has expanded its Switch Online service with four additional classic titles across NES and Game Boy apps. The update also introduces a new boot-up Easter egg for the Game Boy app. Access requires an active base-tier subscription.

New Additions to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online members can now play four more retro games as part of the service's ongoing expansion of classic libraries. On the NES app, Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos and Battletoads have been added, bringing intense action and challenging platforming to modern players. Meanwhile, the Game Boy app welcomes Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and Bionic Commando, offering mythological adventures and grappling-hook action from Nintendo's handheld history.

These titles join the growing catalog available through the subscription service, which aims to preserve and provide access to Nintendo's rich gaming heritage. A trailer showcasing the new games has been released, highlighting their gameplay and nostalgic appeal.

Game Boy App Update

Alongside the game additions, the Game Boy app on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 has received Version 3.0.0. This update includes a boot-up Easter egg that displays the Nintendo or Game Boy logo accompanied by the iconic startup sound. To activate it, users simply twiddle the analogue stick during app launch.

This feature echoes similar additions, such as the one for the Game Boy Advance app in September and the GameCube startup screen in June. It enhances the retro experience by recreating authentic startup sequences from the original hardware.

For a full list of available games, Nintendo provides a dedicated guide on its site. The base-tier Switch Online subscription is required to access these features, with no additional cost for the new content.
