Nyamira MCAs vow to challenge senate's Nyaribo impeachment decision

Some Nyamira County Assembly members have vowed to challenge the Senate's decision to overturn Governor Amos Nyaribo's impeachment in court. They argue the ruling failed to meet the required two-thirds threshold of members. Nyaribo has urged his critics to stop harassment and focus on development.

The Senate overturned the third impeachment attempt against Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo on December 3, 2025, with 38 votes against 4 opposing the governor's legal team's preliminary objection. The decision stemmed from the argument that the County Assembly did not meet the two-thirds threshold of members required. Meanwhile, assembly members were accused of not opening case files and failing to discuss key issues affecting Nyamira residents.

On December 4, 2025, during a media briefing, Kemera Ward Member James Mating'a stated they were dissatisfied with the Senate's ruling and would contest it in court. "We have many ways of dealing with this impeachment... the court to decide this issue on the number of MCAs that make up the two-thirds," Mating'a said. County Assembly Majority Leader George Mora Abuga claimed senators changed their minds after a one-hour break requested by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot during the session.

Nyaribo faced various charges, including engaging in the unlawful Bunge Mashinani initiative, giving illegal assent to the Nyamira County Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2024, and failing to appoint Clive Ogwora to the County Executive Committee against court orders. Other accusations involved payroll fraud, loss of public funds, and usurpation of powers of the Auditor-General and County Public Service Board.

Following the ruling, Nyaribo urged fellow leaders to resolve issues at home rather than bringing them to the Senate. He denied claims of State House support or joining the government, stating he would continue fighting for Abagusii community unity. His allies said the impeachment was meant to pressure him into aligning with the government, as he supports Dr. Fred Matiang’i. Photos of him with Governor Simba Arati, MP Silvanus Osoro, and UDA Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi fueled political alliance rumors.
