Origami Linux 2026.03 launches as first stable release

Origami Linux has exited beta with its 2026.03 snapshot, marking the project's first stable version. Built on Fedora 43 Atomic and featuring the COSMIC 1.0.8 desktop, the distribution introduces a rolling snapshot model. Developers describe it as combining immutable stability with rolling release freshness.

Origami Linux, an immutable distribution based on Fedora 43 Atomic, has left beta and released its first stable snapshot, version 2026.03. This update shifts the project to a rolling snapshot release model, where ISOs represent tested points in time using a Year.Month format. Existing users running the latest updates are already on the 2026.03 state and do not need to reinstall or perform special upgrades.

The release includes the CachyOS 6.19.3 kernel, compiled with full Link-Time Optimization for enhanced performance and responsive desktop scheduling. It features the Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment in version 1.0.8. Available in standard and Nvidia-optimized flavors, Origami Linux integrates Distrobox for isolated development environments.

Several legacy tools are replaced with Rust-powered alternatives: eza for ls, bat for cat, and ripgrep for grep. Out-of-the-box development tools include Helix, LazyGit, Micro, Yazi, Hyperline, Procs, Zellij, and du-dust. Additional features encompass Fastfetch for system info, Starship prompt, custom color themes, Zen Browser, Cloudflare Warp integration, Surge downloader, cava audio visualization, Rust-based sudo replacements, system monitoring tools, and coreutils.

The distribution supports only 64-bit processors. Developers aim to deliver "a continuously updated, unbreakable, and hyper-optimized Linux desktop" that is "rock-solid, incredibly fast, and ready for everyone," including Linux newcomers. The 2026.03 ISO is available for download from the project's website, entering what the team calls its “stable era.”
