SC Paderborn defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2:1 after extra time in the relegation playoff return leg and earned promotion to the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg was relegated after 29 years in the top flight.
In the sold-out stadium in Paderborn, Dženan Pejčinović scored for Wolfsburg as early as the third minute. Joakim Maehle received a yellow-red card in the 14th minute.
Filip Bilbija equalized with a header in the 38th minute. Laurin Curda scored the 2:1 winner for Paderborn in the 100th minute.
Coach Ralf Kettemann said after the match: "It is simply cool." Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking had previously stressed that his team needed to step up.
The first leg had ended 0:0. Paderborn returns to the Bundesliga after six years.
