Paula Badosa has disclosed a torn labrum in her right hip, causing daily pain, as she prepares for the Credit One Charleston Open. The 28-year-old Spaniard explained that while her back injury is under control, the hip issue stems from a psoas problem that worsened after Wimbledon last year. She is managing the injury with injections rather than surgery.
Speaking at media day for the Credit One Charleston Open, Badosa detailed her unseen struggles. “People don’t know,” she said, clarifying that her current pain is not from her back but a labrum tear connected to her psoas muscle. The issue began with discomfort in February after she returned to No. 9 in the rankings and escalated around Wimbledon, leading to the full tear. Despite the pain, she reached the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open and a WTA 125K event in Austin this month, entering Charleston with a 7-8 record this season and ranked No. 112. Currently ranked World No. 112, Badosa faces mental challenges alongside the physical ones. “I’m fighting more with myself, for internal things. Fears, thoughts like ‘What if I don’t achieve this?’” she told El Larguero. She described a battle between positive and negative internal voices, relying on meditation, journaling, and her coach Pol Toledo for support. Toledo, who joined her early in her career, has been key to her 2024 comeback. Badosa will play Kayla Day, ranked No. 156, in her opening match amid a weakened field with withdrawals from players like Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro.
