Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). They visited NDC National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson in Abuja to confirm their membership. Obi urged political actors to end internal conflicts and unnecessary court cases.
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The move follows weeks of speculation over their political future amid a lingering crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
They visited the residence of NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, in Abuja on Sunday. Obi and Kwankwaso arrived around 5:14 p.m. and held consultations with party leaders before a closed-door session that ended around 6:45 p.m. After the meeting, Kwankwaso called on supporters to join the NDC, while Obi advised against resorting to litigation.
Speaking at the event, Obi stated, “I fully support this effort. It is unacceptable that over 50 percent of our population is not actively participating in productive activities that can move this country forward.” He added, “Let us end the internal conflicts and unnecessary court cases within our parties. Let us focus instead on the real challenges facing our country.”
Dr. Katch Onanuju, Director-General of the Heritage Centre and a foundation leader of the Obidient Movement, defended Obi's decision. He told Vanguard that Obi had no choice but to pursue his political future elsewhere due to ADC developments and the yearnings for equity and justice among supporters. Obi concluded by declaring, “This journey we have begun must succeed. This ship must sail.”
