On Friday, May 29, Mérida recorded 135.4 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, a new record for the month.
The Ayuntamiento de Mérida, led by municipal president Cecilia Patrón Laviada, activated a special protocol in response to the rainfall. Public Services teams carried out drainage and water extraction work at several points in the city.
The mayor oversaw operations and ordered the installation of a shelter in the south of the city. Authorities coordinated to handle citizen reports and protect the population.
According to data from the Conagua Meteorological Observatory, the 135.4 millimeters figure surpassed the previous record of 96.4 millimeters set in 2010. The historical May average is 63.9 millimeters.
The National Meteorological Service forecasts more intense rains for Saturday in Yucatán due to a cyclonic circulation and a tropical wave.
