Rio de Janeiro Civil Police carried out an operation on Monday against a group suspected of causing deformities in patients after buttock harmonization aesthetic procedures.
The DECON is investigating whether complications in at least 15 victims were caused by PMMA use or cross-contamination during applications at Instituto Paula Lima.
The operation executed arrest and search warrants at addresses linked to businesswoman Ana Paula Lima de Souza Mariano, who remains at large. She is investigated for crimes against public health, consumer relations, criminal association, illegal practice of medicine and misleading advertising.
Agents seized expired medicines and materials at units in Madureira and Vilar dos Teles. The clinic had already been shut down the previous month by the Health Surveillance agency.
Delegate Wellington Vieira stated the procedure averaged R$ 10 thousand. The CFM banned PMMA use in aesthetic procedures except specific lipodystrophy cases in HIV patients.
