In Fallout season 2, episode six, the Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, finds himself impaled and on the brink of going feral without his vials of serum. A massive figure intervenes, snapping the metal pole with ease, lifting him, tying him up, and dragging him to a church in the Mojave Desert. There, the rescuer reveals himself as a super mutant, portrayed by Ron Perlman.
The super mutant declares, “There’s a war coming, and we need you healthy,” aiming to enlist the Ghoul in a conflict between humans and those labeled as "abominations," including ghouls and super mutants like himself. He specifically blames the Enclave for "set[ting] all of this in motion," holding them responsible for the world's destruction and the creation—and abandonment—of beings like super mutants.
Super mutants in the Fallout universe originate from humans exposed to the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV), a pre-war creation that grants immense strength, endurance, immunity to radiation and disease, and often high intelligence, though they are sterile. Perlman's character appears to hail from a west coast group, possibly linked to The Master, a key figure in the games who sought to build a super race.
Perlman's involvement adds layers of significance. He has narrated the iconic opening of nearly every Fallout game since the 1990s, delivering lines like “War. War never changes.” Reflecting on his start, Perlman once said, “They invited me to do the very first Fallout back in the ’90s, I think. They gave me $40 and a sandwich.” This marks his first on-screen role in the Prime Video adaptation, serving as an Easter egg for fans.
