The fifth season of Sweet Magnolias concluded on Netflix with Dana Sue deciding to move into a solo apartment to assess her marriage to Ronnie. The finale also featured Helen and Erik's wedding.
Dana Sue and Ronnie's relationship reached a breaking point in the season finale after ongoing issues, including Ronnie's focus on his new business and the fire at their home. Dana Sue refused to dance with him at the wedding reception and later told him she needed space.
Brooke Elliott, who plays Dana Sue, said of the decision: "When I read that, I was surprised and not surprised. And I love that the writers did that. It's gotten to that point, so let's not be afraid to have her do that."
Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson discussed the introduction of new character Clark Bellson as a potential catalyst for change in relationships. The season is now streaming on Netflix.
