T.J. Watt, the Steelers' standout pass rusher and seven-time Pro Bowler, experienced discomfort at the team's facility on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, leading to his hospitalization for evaluation of a lung issue. According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Watt stayed overnight in the hospital and remained there Thursday for additional testing. Tomlin noted that Watt communicated with him the previous night and appeared comfortable, but stressed he is not a medical expert. "His status for Monday night is really up in the air," Tomlin said. "I think what transpires this afternoon is going to provide more information for us."
ESPN insider Adam Schefter echoed the uncertainty, stating it would be a surprise if Watt returns in time for the game. "He spent a night in the hospital," Schefter said. "He’s still in the hospital after suffering a lung injury yesterday... that would seem to be a surprise."
Watt did not participate in Thursday's practice, one of five players absent. He had dealt with a toe injury in Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills but played through it in Week 14's win over the Baltimore Ravens. Teammates rallied around Watt. Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith shared that Watt's spirits are good and he is getting better. "I’ve been reaching out, been praying for him, for him to get better," Highsmith said. "Hopefully, he’ll be ready for [Monday], but we’ll see what happens."
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has not spoken to Watt, expressed confidence in the Watt family's resilience. "I would never bet against anybody in the Watt family of being able to deal with something small or large and getting back on the field as quickly as possible," Rodgers said.
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, limited in details, added, "Hope he’s doing good. I’m not familiar with the situation."
