T-Mobile has asked a New York court to declare that Broadcom must continue supporting its VMware perpetual licenses. The mobile carrier is migrating tens of thousands of virtual machines away from the software while the case proceeds.
T-Mobile filed the lawsuit in August 2025 in the Supreme Court of the State of New York. The company said it purchased perpetual VMware licenses in 2023 along with two years of support and an option for a third year.
Broadcom acquired VMware and ended sales of perpetual licenses in favor of subscriptions. When T-Mobile sought to extend support for a third year at a cost of $5,288,398.45, Broadcom declined.
A judge granted T-Mobile an injunction providing support services from October 2025 through August 3, 2026, for $5.28 million plus a $500,000 undertaking. T-Mobile has offered up to $20 million for two years of updates and support to mitigate risks during its migration of over 1,000 applications.
