Tension grips Benue communities over suspected armed herdsmen influx

Residents in several Logo Local Government Area communities in Benue State have reported an influx of suspected armed herdsmen, raising fears of attacks on farmers and farmlands.

The reports indicate that armed herders have entered communities in Tombo, Mbagber and Ukemberegya/Tswarev Council Wards. Local sources also described another group crossing the River Benue near Shaoo, Basham and Akor, west of Anyibe settlement, with concerns that this could threaten Ayilamo, Anyiin and Iorza towns.

A community leader speaking on condition of anonymity said residents fear the situation may worsen without prompt intervention. The leader appealed to the federal and Benue State governments along with security agencies to reinforce security and protect lives and farmlands ahead of the yam harvest.

The leader stated, “People are living in fear because of the increasing movement of armed herders in our communities. We are appealing to the government and security agencies to act swiftly before the situation gets out of hand.” The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment.
