Tigers' prospect Liranzo could be major trade chip at winter meetings

The Detroit Tigers may consider trading catcher Thayron Liranzo during MLB's upcoming Winter Meetings. Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, Liranzo is seen as expendable due to the team's depth at the position. The meetings begin December 8 in Orlando, Florida.

MLB's Winter Meetings are set to kick off on December 8 and run through December 11 in Orlando, Florida. This annual four-day gathering brings representatives from all 30 teams together to discuss business, including free agent signings and trades. Last year, a notable deal saw outfielder Kyle Tucker move from the Houston Astros to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for several players.

The Detroit Tigers are expected to be active participants. Teams are likely to inquire about the availability of ace pitcher Tarik Skubal. However, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter suggests the Tigers could also shop one of their top prospects, catcher Thayron Liranzo.

"A breakout season from AL Gold Glove winner Dillon Dingler at the MLB level and the continued rise of Josue Briceño in the minors gives the Tigers an abundance of catching talent, and there is always a market for potential starting backstops," Reuter wrote.

With multiple catcher options, Liranzo is not viewed as the Tigers' primary choice behind the plate. He could serve as the centerpiece in a significant trade, potentially landing another frontline starter to complement Skubal or a right-handed bat to bolster the lineup. Liranzo joined the organization via a 2024 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, in which the Tigers sent pitcher Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles. This acquisition history may make fans less attached to him compared to homegrown talent.
