Several people are feared dead after a truck carrying logs overturned and landed on a matatu along the Bungoma-Eldoret Highway on Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened at Chimoi some minutes past 3pm on June 27. A truck overturned and came to rest on top of a North Rift 14-seater public service vehicle, trapping passengers inside.
Residents and motorists at the scene tried to free those trapped, but rescue work was slowed by the absence of heavy lifting equipment. Police and emergency teams had not released confirmed figures for fatalities or injuries by late afternoon.
The incident caused long delays on the busy highway that carries traffic between the port of Mombasa and Uganda. The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association advised motorists to avoid the area.
