Unilag to graduate 16,506 students as 709 earn first-class degrees

The University of Lagos will confer degrees on 16,506 students during its 56th convocation from January 16 to 25, 2026, with 709 achieving first-class honours.

According to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, this includes 10,584 undergraduates and diploma holders, 5,922 postgraduates pursuing PhDs and master's degrees, and 140 from the University of Lagos Business School.

Among the graduates, 709 will receive first-class honours. The overall best student is Chukwuzubelu Benedict Umeozo from the Department of Business Administration, with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0. In the sciences, Deborah Isiuwa Oloton from Architecture leads with a CGPA of 4.91.

The events, running from January 16 to 25, 2026, will feature a convocation lecture by Mr. Orondaam Otto, founder of Slum2School Africa, titled 'Maximising Nigeria’s demographic dividend through urgent education reform for global competitiveness in the 21st Century'. UNILAG will also award honorary doctorates to Mr. Jubril Adewale Tinubu and Kanu Godwin Agabi (SAN), the former Attorney-General of the Federation.

UNILAG maintains its status as Nigeria's top university, tied with the University of Ibadan in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings, and recently won the Most International African Institution award for West Africa in 2025.
