A day after Gurvinder Singh was shot dead in broad daylight outside the SSP office in Mohali on Wednesday, his wife Amarjit Kaur recounted that he had been receiving continuous threats from gangsters for nearly two years. Gurvinder was an accused in the murder case of Gurlal Brar, cousin of terrorist Goldy Brar. Police have registered a case against Goldy Brar and others.
On Thursday, as Amarjit Kaur waited outside Civil Hospital in Phase 6 for the postmortem of her husband Gurvinder Singh, she told reporters about the threats he had faced. They met in 2023, and after the threats began, Gurvinder left Mohali and shifted with her to Gurdaspur, where they had been living for the past one and a half years. He only came to Mohali on court hearing dates, and she always accompanied him due to the danger. On Wednesday, the couple arrived in Mohali for a court hearing in a case involving the recovery of 4 kg of opium. As they returned after the hearing and Gurvinder opened the boot of their old i20 car parked near the SSP office, a shooter fired from behind and then from the front. A bullet grazed Amarjit's head, narrowly sparing her life. She added, 'Many times he felt that unknown vehicles were tailing us. He mentioned it earlier too, but we didn’t take it seriously. Now it feels he was right — the gangsters may have been tracking him for a long time.' The car’s familiarity may have made him an easy target, as they always parked in the same spot to enter the court complex. A social media post from accounts purportedly belonging to Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara claimed responsibility for the killing. Mohali police have registered a case against them and launched an investigation. The postmortem was conducted by a four-member medical board, including forensic experts, lasting nearly two hours and fully videographed. Afterward, the body was handed over to the family. A dispute arose outside the hospital mortuary over the last rites: Amarjit wanted to take the body to Gurdaspur, while Gurvinder's grandmother insisted on cremation in their native village Rurki Pukhta. The disagreement lasted several hours until DSP City-2 Harsimran Singh Bal intervened and resolved it in favor of the ancestral village. Police officials stated that the investigation is ongoing, with all aspects being thoroughly examined.
