Former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has requested to postpone his appearance regarding jewels seized from his office. The request follows his indictment on Friday for smuggling and tax fraud. He will maintain the scheduled testimony on the airline Plus Ultra bailout.
The defense of the former PSOE leader has asked judge José Luis Calama for more time to gather documentation on the origin of the jewels valued at 1.3 million euros. These were found in a safe in his office on Ferraz Street in Madrid.
Zapatero was indicted last Friday in a separate case for smuggling and tax fraud. His circle claims he needs to prepare a possible prescription of the tax offense.
The former president will appear on June 17 and 18 at the Audiencia Nacional. The postponement request affects only the jewels matter and not the main investigation into the 53 million euros rescue of Plus Ultra.
