The boy then fired a single shot from a gun legally registered to his mother, striking Jones-Walker in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Jones-Walker did not live at the residence, and the boy had been staying with another family member at the time.

Neighbors provided context on prior tensions. Shyreea Blocker, who lives nearby, told WCAU she had heard verbal arguments between the couple before, stating, "arguing and fighting, but that's nothing new with them. It's a shame. It shouldn't be like that."
Another neighbor, Gilbert Blocker, expressed concern for the boy, saying, "The things he's going to suffer in his heart if he has any feelings, is going to last him not just now but for the rest of his life."
