Harviestoun Brewery hosts community open night in Alva

Harviestoun Brewery in Alva, Clackmannanshire, opened its doors to the local community for an evening of drinks, food, and music. The event drew around 80 people of all ages, showcasing the brewery's growth amid Scotland's craft beer scene. Attendees enjoyed fresh beers and tacos in a lively atmosphere.

Nestled in Alva, Clackmannanshire, Harviestoun Brewery has been producing beers since 1893, with popular offerings like Schiehallion craft lager and Bitter & Twisted golden ale available in pubs and supermarkets across Scotland. The brewery has sponsored events such as the Scottish Album of the Year awards and continues to expand its presence.

On a recent Friday evening, the brewery welcomed locals for one of its open tap nights. Visitors, including families and friends from the village, filled the space around makeshift barrel tables and benches. The crowd of about 80 people mingled amid the aroma of hoppy beer and food, with classic rock and indie music playing in the background.

Food options included tacos, served from a queue alongside the bar. Staff poured pints quickly and with smiles, offering draught selections like the amber ale Haggis Hunter, described as fruity with a smooth citrus flavor and a hint of spice. Those present noted that beers tasted fresher and more vibrant straight from the tap.

Attendees caught up with old acquaintances while touring the impressive setup of giant metal tanks. One visitor reflected, “It was a great wee night, ae?” as they left.

These events highlight Harviestoun's commitment to sharing its success with supporters, especially as Scotland's drinks industry faces challenges from global unrest and a cost-of-living crisis. In contrast to recent headlines about the BrewDog sale, Harviestoun demonstrates the vitality of the craft beer sector. Future summer nights may feature spit roasts, BBQs, and an expanded outdoor area in the service yard, offering views of the Hillfoots.

The next open tap night is scheduled for Friday, April 24.
