Government apologizes over Gwangju murder case, vows police reforms

Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung apologized on July 16 over police mishandling of a Gwangju murder case and outlined reform measures.

Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung said at the government complex in Seoul, "As the interior minister responsible for the people's lives and safety, I express my deep regret and consolation to the victim's family and apologize for causing concern to the people."

The case involves 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, accused of killing a 16-year-old female high school student and attempting to kill a 17-year-old male student on May 5. Allegations that police leaked investigative material to the suspect's father, also a police officer, surfaced during a supplementary investigation by prosecutors.

The government will adopt a full-scale rotational assignment system to prevent collusion and introduce voluntary disclosure and recusal systems. It is also considering a civilian-led body to investigate human rights violations.
