Fonseca saved two match points in his second-round win over Karen Khachanov and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of 23rd-seeded Tommy Paul, showcasing powerful groundstrokes.

"We tennis players, we look to playing against top players so it's going to be a pleasure -- and hopefully I can get the win," Fonseca said.

In another key match, Germany's fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev overcame American Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-4.
