World number two Jannik Sinner defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells ATP Masters on Sunday. The Italian will next face Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, who upset Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3. Fourth seed Alexander Zverev also advanced, holding off Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-4.
Jannik Sinner of Italy moved into the fourth round of the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 with a straight-sets victory over Canada's Denis Shapovalov on Sunday. After conceding the first game, Sinner broke back immediately and secured another break in the eighth game to take the first set 6-3. In the second set, he broke early to lead 5-2 and closed out the match with a love game for a 6-2 win.
"It's a very tough second match for me," Sinner said. "He's a very high-quality player... he had great wins in the past so I'm very happy about today's performance."
Sinner, who dropped just two games in his second-round match against Dalibor Svrcina, added: "I tried to stay solid on the baseline but also a bit more aggressive in the second set. It was a tough start for me with a break down but I'm happy how I reacted."
Awaiting Sinner is 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who reached the fourth round for the first time at a Masters 1000 event. Fonseca saved two match points in his second-round win over Karen Khachanov and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of 23rd-seeded Tommy Paul, showcasing powerful groundstrokes.
"We tennis players, we look to playing against top players so it's going to be a pleasure -- and hopefully I can get the win," Fonseca said.
In another key match, Germany's fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev overcame American Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-4. Zverev won the first-set tiebreaker dominantly but lost the second after Nakashima converted his fifth break point. No breaks occurred until the final game of the third set, where Zverev sealed the win. Nakashima fired 17 aces to Zverev's 15.
"He played a fantastic match today," Zverev said. "He served like I have never seen before... so I've got to give credit to him."
Zverev, improving to 6-0 lifetime against Nakashima, next faces Frances Tiafoe, who beat Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-2. Elsewhere, American Learner Tien upset eighth-seeded Ben Shelton 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-3, serving 15 aces despite Shelton's illness.
