Ehemaliger PlayStation-Chef fordert Xbox zur Entscheidung zwischen Publisher- oder Plattform-Strategie auf

Shawn Layden, der bis 2019 die PlayStation Studios leitete, erklärte, Microsoft müsse sich entscheiden, ob das Unternehmen der weltweit größte Spiele-Publisher oder eine wettbewerbsfähige Konsolenplattform sein wolle. Er argumentierte, dass beide Wege nicht miteinander vereinbar seien.

Layden erläuterte, dass eine erfolgreiche Plattform exklusive Inhalte benötige, ähnlich wie Nintendos Mario- und Zelda-Reihen oder die Kratos- und Horizon-Serien von PlayStation. Im Gegensatz dazu müsse der größte Publisher seine Spiele auf möglichst vielen Plattformen veröffentlichen.

Er verwies auf Microsofts Übernahmen, darunter ZeniMax Media für 7,5 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2020 und Activision Blizzard für 68,7 Milliarden US-Dollar im Jahr 2022, die das Unternehmen an die Spitze der Publisher befördert hätten. Diese Schritte, die 2018 mit mehreren Studios begannen, hätten ein Hybridmodell geschaffen, das laut Layden zu Unklarheiten führe.

Layden betonte, dass er einen starken Wettbewerb in der Branche bevorzuge, und erinnerte an die Ära der Xbox 360 und PlayStation 3. Dies habe zu besseren Spielen sowie mehr Begeisterung bei Spielern und Entwicklern gleichermaßen geführt.

Die Kommentare fielen in einem Interview wenige Tage vor den jüngsten Entlassungen bei Xbox, in dem Layden die Herausforderungen für die aktuelle Xbox-Chefin Asha Sharma erörterte.
