The Marcos administration will study the implications of the US campaign against the International Criminal Court. The ICC is set to begin its trial on the crimes against humanity case of former President Rodrigo Duterte this year.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled last Monday a campaign aimed at disabling the ICC’s ability to operate or target American servicemen or officials. The Philippines ceased to be an ICC member in 2019 after withdrawing from the Rome Statute.
Palace press officer Claire Castro said the effect on the implementation of Philippine laws is being studied. She noted that officials would wait for President Marcos’ pronouncement on whether to support the US stance.
Duterte was arrested on March 11, 2025, on an ICC warrant and is detained in The Hague. His trial is scheduled to begin in November. The administration surrendered him last year in line with Interpol commitments.
