Egypt targets 71 million meals in Ramadan social protection drive

Egypt aims to provide more than 71 million hot meals and distribute over 5.5 million food boxes to vulnerable families during Ramadan, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced. The presidential initiative, Abwab Al-Khair, was launched at People’s Square in the New Administrative Capital.

Egypt has launched the Abwab Al-Khair presidential initiative, organized by the Tahya Misr Fund in coordination with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, to offer comprehensive social protection during Ramadan. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, speaking at the event in the New Administrative Capital, emphasized that the program goes beyond mere charity to address financial burdens on citizens.

The effort targets the distribution of 5.5 million food boxes through ongoing convoys to all governorates, alongside 4 million hot meals prepared by the Tahya Misr Fund and the ministry’s Mahrousa kitchens. An additional 60 million meals will come from a network of 286 partners and 657 Ahl Al-Khair distribution points nationwide.

“The value of Abwab Al-Khair lies not only in the volume of aid but in its governing philosophy,” Madbouly said. “Feeding is not passing charity, but comprehensive social protection.” Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy stated that the government’s priorities focus on supporting the most vulnerable families through integrated partnerships with civil society and the private sector. Tamer Abdel Fattah, Executive Director of the Tahya Misr Fund, noted that the fund will provide 3 million dry food boxes and hundreds of tonnes of poultry and meat.

The initiative reaches diverse groups and areas. The National Alliance for Civil Development Work aims to benefit 14 million people via the Athar Al-Khair program, operating 250 charity tables and 150 kitchens. The Egyptian Red Crescent’s Helal Al-Khair campaign targets 6.5 million beneficiaries, including meals for Palestinians in Gaza and humanitarian kitchens in Al-Arish, Rafah, and Sheikh Zuweid.

In the New Administrative Capital, a distribution outlet will supply 9,000 food boxes to security, maintenance, and auxiliary staff. The National Council for Women will distribute 15,000 boxes to female breadwinners, with 13,000 for social workers and 8,000 for the village of Humaithara in the Red Sea governorate. The Fund for Supporting Civil Society Projects will provide 40,000 boxes to 36,000 families in alternative housing projects and families of the injured or deceased from Gaza.

Madbouly described the initiative as a model of cooperation between the government, national funds, and civil society, ensuring “no one is left behind.” The launch was attended by the ministers of Local Development, Social Solidarity, Supply, Endowments, and Agriculture, as well as the governors of Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia.
