Dutch studio Mulder Design has revealed new details and renderings for its 70-metre superyacht concept, Project Opal, first presented in 2024. The design draws inspiration from Caribbean villa living, blending a high-speed hull with interiors that evoke coastal homes. It aims to reimagine luxury yachting through practical and poetic elements.
Mulder Design, a Dutch studio, has shared additional information on Project Opal, a 70-metre superyacht concept introduced to the industry in 2024. The yacht combines a proven hull platform, capable of increasing speed by up to 30 per cent depending on the engine package, with interiors inspired by Caribbean summer villas. This approach blurs the lines between yacht and coastal residence, using materials like weathered teak and leather wood for a maritime feel, rough stone for coastal texture, and natural linen upholstery to achieve "villa authenticity".
The design team described it as: "Every element balances practical design with poetic inspiration. The result elevates the yachting experience into art, where every moment feels like a gentle escape to a Caribbean hideaway that happens to float upon the sea."
Key features include an automatic wooden pergola in the main deck lounge, paired with a kinetic light installation mimicking a Caribbean terrace. The lounge also has a bar made from rough stone and worked wood, plus a teak walkway separating two areas with wave-pattern carpeting and low sofas. Signature elements feature flared bulwarks on the upper decks to enhance visibility and expand the owner's forward deck from the suite. The provisional layout includes a guest skylounge aft, which could be adapted into a larger owner's deck.
Accommodations comprise six guest cabins forward on the main deck, with the saloon and dining aft connecting to a multi-zone deck offering a bar, al fresco dining, and lounge. The lower deck is reserved for crew. The upper level has an aft sundeck and a hidden forward observation deck with a spa pool. At the stern, a beach club opens via glass doors to a swim platform and transformer platform, while a transverse garage stores tenders and toys.
Bas Mulder, owner of Mulder Design, explained the exterior: "With the exterior styling, what we have aimed to achieve is a look that appeals to a lot of people and therefore isn't something too crazy, and which mirrors current trends in a way that isn't so super-modern it would date quickly." He added: "The core attributes are calm and elegant lines that work in harmony with the marine environment rather than screaming for attention. The project's organic lines follow the flow of waves and clouds, and the yacht looks like she was sculpted by the wind."
In the previous year, Mulder Design presented the 28-metre Onyx 92 concept to BOAT International.
