The Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships began on Thursday in Indianapolis, marking the start of three days of competition for Penn State athletes aiming for national qualification spots.
After day one, the Penn State men's team stood in fourth place, while the women's team was in fifth, with a pair of podium finishes boosting their standings. Senior Maddie Pitts delivered a standout performance in the pentathlon, her final Big Ten championship appearance. She recorded a personal-best time of 8.34 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles for first place, earning 1,052 points early. In the high jump, Pitts achieved another personal best of 1.67 meters for seventh place, moving to fourth overall with 1,870 points. She threw 12.91 meters in the shot put for third, then jumped 6.24 meters in the long jump for another third-place finish and personal best. Pitts capped her day with a 2:16.68 in the 800 meters, securing third place overall and setting a Penn State school record with 4,384 points.
The men's 600 meters saw strong results, with Nebraska transfer Niko Schultz setting a meet record of 1:15.22, the third-best time in school history, followed by Allon Clay's personal best of 1:15.47 and Handal Roban's 1:15.96 for fourth. Kaleb Nastari placed ninth with 1:17.01. In the men's 200-meter prelims, sophomore Ajani Dwyer ran 20.51 seconds, breaking his No. 2 school time and qualifying second for Saturday's finals.
Charlotte Costich finished ninth in the women's 5,000 meters with 16:07.86. Nick Sloff earned six points for the men in the 5,000 meters, crossing fourth in 13:49.93 but moving to third after a disqualification. The women's distance medley relay team of Hayley Kitching, Alexandria North, Boh Ritchie, and Ada Rand took third in 10:57.52. The men's distance medley relay, featuring Yukichi Ishii, Matt DeMatteo, Luke Seymour, and Ryan Watson, placed fifth in 9:41.01.
