The Washington and Lee University equestrian team tied for first place at the IHSA regular season finale at Virginia Tech on Saturday, scoring 34 points after the drop. They shared the High Point Team of the Day honors with the University of Lynchburg after three tie-breakers. This result secured third place in the regional standings for the Generals.
Blacksburg, Va. — The Washington and Lee University equestrian team concluded its IHSA regular season with a strong performance at the Virginia Tech finale on Saturday. The Generals tied for first with 34 points after the drop, earning Co-High Point Team of the Day alongside the University of Lynchburg. The teams remained deadlocked through three tie-breakers.
Samantha Bourque led the effort, earning Reserve High Point Rider of the Day honors with wins in the Open Flat and Intermediate Fences classes. Elisabeth Marek placed second in Open Flat and fifth in Open Fences. Other key contributions included Tytus Boston's win in Pre-Novice, Kate Martin's victory in the Introductory class—which qualified her for Regionals—and Ryon Sinclair's runner-up finishes in Limit Flat and Limit Fences.
Irene Tsengas finished second in Limit Flat, Jade Condrell took third in Intermediate Fences, and Grace Steinberg placed third in Novice. The team's multiple class wins and top-three finishes helped secure the co-championship.
Final team results showed Washington and Lee and Lynchburg at 34 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 31, Hollins at 29, Bridgewater College at 26, James Madison University at 25, University of Virginia at 10, Roanoke College at 7, and Ferrum College at 0.
In the final regional standings, the University of Lynchburg led with 337 points, Virginia Tech had 292, and Washington and Lee finished third with 285, just seven points behind second place.
Regional qualifiers for Washington and Lee include Elisabeth Marek in Open Flat, Samantha Bourque in Intermediate Flat, Lydia Bowersox in Limit Fences, Irene Tsengas in Novice, and Kate Martin in Introductory.
The Generals advance to IHSA Regional competition on Sunday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at the Smithfield Horse Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
