Jean-Luc Mélenchon jokes about pronouncing Raphaël Glucksmann's name

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France insoumise, has drawn accusations of antisemitism by mocking the pronunciation of MEP Raphaël Glucksmann's name at a rally in Perpignan. Glucksmann compared the remark to those of Jean-Marie Le Pen. These comments come amid tensions over electoral alliances and recent criticisms of Mélenchon's past statements.

At a rally in Perpignan on March 1, Jean-Luc Mélenchon joked about pronouncing Raphaël Glucksmann's name, sighing: “Monsieur Glucksman et je ne sais qui encore, Glucksmann pardon…, après j’en ai pour des heures.” He pronounced it “Glucksman” then “Glucksmane.” The Place publique MEP responded on X with: “OK Jean-Marie Le Pen,” along with a video clip.

This echoes Mélenchon's earlier irony on February 26 about Jeffrey Epstein's name. He questioned the pronunciation “Epstine,” suggesting it aimed to Russify it and hide its Jewish origin, leading to accusations of antisemitism for mocking Jewish names and implying a conspiracy.

Political figures condemned the remarks. Olivier Faure, the Socialist Party's first secretary, wrote on X: “Tout ça finira mal…

This alludes to Jean-Marie Le Pen's 1988 pun “Durafour crématoire,” linking Minister Michel Durafour's name to Nazi camps, for which he was convicted.

These incidents precede the municipal elections on March 15 and 22. The PS and Les Ecologistes have not ruled out second-round deals with La France insoumise, but on a case-by-case basis, provided candidates take clear stances against antisemitism and political violence, especially after the death of far-right militant Quentin Deranque at the hands of ultraleft activists, some linked to LFI deputy Raphaël Arnault. Socialist voices, including François Hollande, Jérôme Guedj, and Carole Delga, call for a complete break.

Mélenchon defended himself at the rally: “Je ne suis pas antisémite, he proclaimed. Je ne le suis pas pour d’innombrables raisons, et je n’ai pas l’intention d’aller présenter des justifications et des certificats de baptême à je ne sais qui.” He added: “Nous combattons l’islamophobie, nous combattons le racisme antijuifs.”

In response to Jean-Luc Mélenchon's recent mockery of Jewish names like those of Raphaël Glucksmann and Jeffrey Epstein, Marine Le Pen accused him on RTL of antisemitic provocation and highlighted media double standards favoring the left over the National Rally. The Socialist Party labeled the remarks antisemitic.

During the 2026 municipal election campaign, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, provocatively adopted Eric Zemmour's 'great replacement' rhetoric to praise a 'new France' that is increasingly diverse. This move aims to establish a counter-narrative on French identity ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where he expects a showdown with the National Rally on these issues.

La France insoumise has excluded Yves Bouteiller, its lead candidate for the 2026 municipal elections in Romilly-sur-Seine, in the Aube department, due to social media posts deemed antisemitic. The party withdrew his endorsement on Friday and announced his expulsion on Saturday. Bouteiller claims he has received no explanation from the party.
