Minnesota stepmother sentenced to prison for child torture

Vivian Rose Wahlstrom, a 25-year-old stepmother in Minnesota, has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison after pleading guilty to torturing her elementary school-aged stepdaughter. The case involved severe abuse documented on home videos, leading to charges against her and her husband. Prosecutors described it as one of the most severe child abuse incidents in the state.

In Itasca County, Minnesota, Vivian Rose Wahlstrom pleaded guilty to child torture and received a sentence of 57 months, equivalent to four years and nine months, in prison. She was credited for 433 days already served. The abuse targeted her stepdaughter, an elementary school-aged girl from her husband Jaymeson Patrick Wahlstrom's previous relationship. Jaymeson, 28, faces the same charge and has a court appearance scheduled for March 23.

The investigation by the Grand Rapids Police Department began in early October 2024, prompted by the girl arriving at school with a large bruise on her upper right arm. She reported that her father caused the injury. Medical examination revealed at least 20 bruises on her arms, mouth, ribs, back, thighs, shoulders, face, and ears. At the family home, authorities found the girl's room equipped only with a bare, urine-stained mattress, one blanket, a pile of dirty dishes containing moldy food, and a television. Other areas of the house contained urine, dog feces, dirty clothing, and garbage.

Jaymeson Wahlstrom told detectives that his wife showed little interest in caring for the girl and had suggested sending her to boarding school or pursuing divorce. He admitted to withholding food as punishment, noting that the girl resorted to eating paint chips and played with an empty McDonald's Happy Meal box due to a lack of toys. Home videos captured the girl isolated in her room for extended periods daily. The parents reportedly forced her to lie still on her back with hands at her sides, removing her blanket for misbehavior and restricting her movements. Verbal abuse was frequent, including one instance where Vivian Wahlstrom shouted at the child, "Get in your room before I f—ing kill you."

In a particularly violent episode shortly before his arrest, Jaymeson Wahlstrom assaulted the girl nearly 100 times, including punches, slaps, kicks, and slamming her against the wall, while tearing off her clothes. Vivian Wahlstrom encouraged the attack. He yelled, "Until you have some words to say, you will not be going to school, you will not be getting food, you won't be getting anything but your bed and the toilet." He added, "You better f—ing think of some meaningful words for your mom or she won't take care of you anymore."

Charges were filed on December 19, 2024, and child services assumed custody of the three children in the home. Itasca County Attorney Jake Fauchald stated, "Following a diligent investigation undertaken by the Grand Rapids Police Department, the Itasca County Attorney's Office has filed Child Torture charges against Vivian and Jaymeson Wahlstrom. The evidence supporting these charges is primarily in the form of numerous videos taken from a camera within the Wahlstrom home that depict the Wahlstroms engaging in barbaric assaults against a child in the home. These heinous crimes are without precedent in Itasca County and rank highly amongst some of the most abominable child abuse cases ever encountered in Minnesota."
