West Brewery celebrates 20 years with price rollback on St Mungo

West Brewery in Glasgow is marking its 20th anniversary by offering pints of its flagship St Mungo lager at the original 2006 price of £2.90. The promotion runs from March 10 to 12 at the brewery's WEST on the Green venue and 19 participating spots across the central belt. Founded in 2006 by Bavarian-born Petra Wetzel, the independent brewer adheres to the German Reinheitsgebot purity law.

West Brewery, established in Glasgow's east end in 2006, has grown into one of Scotland's established independent operators. The company employs 60 staff and supplies hundreds of on-trade and off-trade accounts across Scotland and the wider UK. It remains entirely independently owned, brewing, packaging, and distributing all its beer from its Glasgow base in a vertically integrated model.

The brewery follows the Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, using only four ingredients: soft water from Loch Katrine, British malted barley, noble Hallertau hops, and proprietary yeast strains. This applies to its range, including St Mungo, WEST 4, Heidi-Weisse, and Munich Red. The brewery now offers 10 different beers, with alcohol-free options, radlers, and seasonal releases such as Oktoberfest Märzen.

To celebrate the milestone, pints of St Mungo will be available for £2.90 from March 10 to 12 at WEST on the Green—housed in the former Templeton’s carpet factory, which attracts around 500,000 visitors annually—and at 19 venues, including Sloans, The Horseshoe Bar, and Hootenanny.

During the period, WEST on the Green will also serve its signature Currywurst for £6.80, available in-venue and via Uber Eats. Petra Wetzel founded the brewery to bring traditional German brewing standards to Scotland. She stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2021, with Matt Munro appointed as managing director.

Munro stated, “Reaching 20 years is a significant milestone in any sector, but particularly in brewing, where the market has changed dramatically since we launched. From the outset, WEST was built around doing things properly—brewing traditionally, investing for the long term and staying independent.” He added that the price rollback for St Mungo honors customers and partners who have supported the business over two decades.

The brewery's focus remains on sustainable growth, independent ownership, quality beer, and strong roots in Glasgow.
