Elina Svitolina defeated Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the Indian Wells quarterfinals, securing her second career win over the world No. 2. The Ukrainian advances to face Elena Rybakina in the semifinals, marking her first appearance there since 2019. This victory extends Svitolina's strong 2026 season, where she leads the tour with 19 wins.
Elina Svitolina, ranked ninth, produced a statement performance against Iga Swiatek on Thursday at the Indian Wells ATP and WTA Masters 1000 event. Entering with a 1-4 record against the world No. 2, Svitolina flipped the script in a 2-hour, 9-minute match played under temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the first set, Svitolina broke immediately as Swiatek double-faulted twice and erred on a forehand, racing to a 5-1 lead. Swiatek struggled on second serves, winning just one of eight points, while Svitolina generated eight break points and closed the set in under 40 minutes despite one break against her.
Swiatek rebounded in the second set, breaking for 3-1 and consolidating to 4-1. Svitolina responded with a break back to 4-3, highlighted by a net winner, but a string of errors handed the set to the Pole at 6-4.
The third set featured eight consecutive holds amid pressure from both sides. Svitolina broke in the ninth game after Swiatek saved one break point but erred on a backhand. The Ukrainian then held at love, sealing the win with a forehand volley on match point after an ace.
"There is no champion who is waiting for mistakes," Svitolina said post-match. "And you really have to try to set yourself up in a good position to attack. I was feeling good and I was trying to really open up the court and try to take advantage, because Iga is such an aggressive player, and she moves really well. So if you don't take the opportunity at the right time, she's going to take it."
This marks Svitolina's second win over Swiatek in six meetings, the first since Wimbledon 2023. It is her tour-leading 19th victory of 2026, following titles in Auckland and a runner-up finish in Dubai. Svitolina remains undefeated in three-set matches this season at 6-0 and returned to the top 10 in February for the first time since becoming a mother in 2021.
For Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Indian Wells winner, it was her third quarterfinal exit of 2026, after the Australian Open and Doha. She committed eight double faults in the match.
In the semifinals, the 31-year-old Svitolina will meet Elena Rybakina, against whom she holds a 3-3 record, including a straight-sets win in Madrid last season. This will be their second hard-court encounter since Svitolina's Olympic victory in Tokyo five years ago.
