Tokyo Xtreme Racer series returns to PlayStation after 2005

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer series has reappeared on PlayStation consoles for the first time since 2005 with a new entry on PS5. Developed by Genki using Unreal Engine 5, the game launched on PC in September 2025 and has now arrived on the current-generation Sony hardware. Players have praised its nostalgic arcade racing style.

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer series originated as a Sega exclusive before shifting to PlayStation 2 exclusivity in 2001 with Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Zero. Subsequent titles followed rapidly: Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2, all released between 2001 and 2005. After that period, the series left PlayStation platforms. In 2006, it appeared on Xbox 360 as Import Tuner Challenge, a one-off title, before entering dormancy with only limited mobile releases.

The revival came in 2025, retaining the Tokyo Xtreme Racer name and powered by Unreal Engine 5. The PC version debuted on September 25, 2025, and earned a 95% approval rating on Steam from nearly 10,000 user reviews, qualifying for an “Overwhelmingly Positive” status. User feedback emphasized its faithful recreation of early and mid-2000s arcade racing gameplay, a style many consider the genre's peak.

The PS5 version, priced at $49.99 on the PlayStation Store, has garnered a 4.76 out of 5 rating from almost 1,000 reviews. It launches as PS5 Pro enhanced, a feature not common among new releases for the premium console. Despite positive reception, the title has received minimal promotion from PlayStation, including no official trailers, which may explain its under-the-radar status among console owners.

This return taps into nostalgia for the PS2 era, when the console became the best-selling video game system of all time due to its strong library of titles.

A Sony Interactive Entertainment abandonou os planos de lançar no PC jogos single-player first-party atuais e futuros do PlayStation, segundo um relatório da Bloomberg.
