GeekDad approves finished Kinfire Council board game

GeekDad has reviewed the completed version of Kinfire Council, a worker placement game crowdfunded on Kickstarter in April 2024 and delivered to backers in fall 2025. Designed by Kevin Wilson and published by Incredible Dream Studios, the game places players as council members in the city of Din’Lux, balancing city needs against personal ambitions amid threats from the Cult of Altan. The review highlights its engaging mechanics and ties to the broader Atios universe.

Kinfire Council is a worker placement game for 2 to 6 players, aged 14 and up, with playtime of 90 to 120 minutes. It retails for $74.99 and is available from Incredible Dream Studios, with an optional Winds of Change expansion for $34.99. The game features art direction by Katarzyna Bekus and includes components such as a status board, three dual-layer city boards, various chits and tokens, and decks of threat, research, and decree cards.

Set in the fictional world of Atios, players act as councilors in Din’Lux, a city built on a hill threatened by the Cult of Altan. The objective is to score the most victory points over five rounds by addressing city needs, building lighthouses, and thwarting threats, while managing resources like food, stone, crystal, magic, and coins. If the cult achieves the highest score, the player with the most cult influence wins as the conspirator.

Gameplay unfolds in three phases per round: Sun’s Rise for drawing decrees and resolving cultists; Day’s Light for placing workers and seekers on locations to gather resources, vote, train abilities, or arrest cultists; and Night’s Fall for scoring city needs, resolving decrees, and lighthouse progress. Cultists block locations and advance threats, which can damage the lighthouse or increase demands if not addressed.

The review notes asymmetries from councilor and seeker abilities, such as Hierophant Selen accessing coffers or Guildmaster Leera sending workers outside the city. It connects to other titles like Kinfire Chronicles: Night’s Fall and Kinfire Delve, sharing characters and lore. Reviewer praises the table presence, story integration, and bureaucratic tensions, stating, “It’s eye-opening, and yet it’s also a fun game to play.” Kinfire Council earns GeekDad Approved status.
