Kenya launches new border crime unit after UK-backed training

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched the Counter-Organised Immigration Crime Team on Friday with 29 officers trained under a Kenya-UK programme. The unit will target human trafficking and transnational crime at border points.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched the Counter-Organised Immigration Crime Team on Friday, July 25. Director Mohamed Amin flagged off the 29 officers at the Border Police Training Campus in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County, on behalf of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

The officers, drawn from the National Police Service, completed training under the Kenya-UK Border Security Programme. They will report to the DCI Serious Crime Unit and operate at frontline border stations to combat human trafficking, smuggling and organised immigration crime.

British High Commission representative Ben Fisher described the launch as a landmark achievement and the first specialised capability of its kind in East Africa. The move follows a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year between Kenya and the United Kingdom.
