Time-restricted eating linked to better cognition in older women

A small trial found that older women who limited daily eating to about eight hours showed greater improvements in planning and problem-solving skills than those who ate over 12 hours. Both groups lost similar amounts of weight during the six-month study.

Researchers followed 47 women ages 50 to 79 with overweight or obesity. All participants reduced calorie intake by 500 calories per day. Twenty-six women also ate within a window of less than nine hours, typically from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

After six months, participants in both groups lost an average of about 15 pounds. The time-restricted group performed significantly better on tests of spatial planning and problem solving. They also tended to make fewer errors on memory and learning tasks, though that difference was not statistically significant.

"Losing weight alone will ward off some of the aging-related cognitive decline, and these data suggest that there may be additional benefits if you stop eating 4 hours prior to going to sleep," said Sue Shapses, the study's principal investigator from Rutgers University.

The findings were presented on July 26 at the NUTRITION 2026 meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. Researchers noted that larger studies are needed to confirm the results.

Adults with overweight or obesity who limited eating to an eight-hour daily window during a 12-week program maintained more weight loss one year later than participants assigned to eat over 12 hours or more, according to researchers in Spain.

A small 2023 study of adults with obesity in China found that an intermittent energy restriction program was associated with weight loss and changes in gut bacteria alongside altered activity in brain regions linked to appetite, cravings and self-control.

An 18-month clinical trial involving more than 200 adults with obesity found that intermittent fasting led to about the same average weight loss as continuous calorie restriction after six months, while participants on the fasting plan reported less need to constantly monitor or restrict their eating.

Women maintain normal scores on standard memory tests for nearly three years longer than men even after Alzheimer’s-related brain changes begin. This cognitive advantage can mask early signs of the disease and delay treatment. A new analysis of long-term studies in the US and Canada highlights the issue.

A new perspective article in Frontiers in Nutrition argues that public health advice on protein intake and physical activity is largely designed to prevent deficiency, and that many people may benefit from aiming above today’s minimum recommendations to support strength, independence and cognitive function as they age.
