Trump accuses China of interfering in 2020 US presidential race

US President Trump accused China of interfering in the 2020 presidential election during a White House address, claiming Beijing obtained 220 million voter files.

Trump delivered a nearly 30-minute prime-time address from the White House on Thursday Washington time, accusing China of interfering in the 2020 US presidential race that he lost to Joe Biden.

He claimed Beijing orchestrated “what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history”, resulting in the “illicit acquisition” of 220 million US voter files.

The US president also argued that intelligence documents revealed “shocking vulnerabilities” in the country’s election infrastructure, leaving it exposed to “hacking, exploitation, and foreign interference”.

Political scientist Zheng Yongnian said the allegations are campaign rhetoric and not likely to affect ties with Beijing, adding that Washington should reflect on reforming its own democracy.
