On December 2, 2022, hunters discovered the dismembered torso of a woman in a remote swamp in Liberty County, Georgia, near Savannah. Investigator Jack Frost described the scene: "Down here is where the hunters had discovered the torso of a female in the ditch." Nearby items included a Milwaukee brand knife, a plastic tote with blood traces, and wipes. Over five days, authorities recovered the rest of the body, noting defensive wounds. Assistant District Attorney Laurie Baio stated, "There's no one that winds up dismembered in the woods that's not a victim of homicide."
Sketches released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation led to hundreds of tips. One came from Heather Thomas, ex-wife of Nicholas Kassotis, who recognized the face as Mindi Kassotis. Nick, a decorated Navy JAG officer who served in Iraq, Italy, and the Pentagon, had married Mindi in 2016 after divorcing Heather in 2015. Friends Angela Wynn and Morgan Paddock recalled Mindi's excitement about starting a family and her podcast, "Compelling Women," where she interviewed inspiring women.
By June 2022, the couple lived in Savannah, communicating via the encrypted Signal app on Nick's insistence. Mindi told friends of hacking, frozen bank accounts, and surveillance tied to Nick's classified work. She believed they were in danger, even mentioning a possible tail and video surveillance from a van. In November 2022, Nick informed friends and family that Mindi died suddenly from a medical issue and was cremated, with no funeral. Soon after, reports emerged that Nick himself died in a car crash.
Heather's tip led to DNA confirmation that the remains were Mindi's. Investigators found no record of Nick's death but traced him to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, living under the alias Nicholas Kilian James Stark with third wife Samantha Kolesnik, whom he told he was a widower. In May 2023, Nick was questioned and claimed an FBI agent named Jim McIntyre had controlled their lives for years, directing moves and providing protection. He alleged McIntyre might have killed Mindi after she fell and died at a clinic.
Evidence contradicted his story. Surveillance captured Nick's green Ford Explorer near the scene. He purchased the Milwaukee knife at Home Depot and a seven-piece knife kit at Bass Pro Shop shortly before. Phone and GPS records placed him at the location. No evidence of Jim McIntyre, an actual FBI agent, was found; a local man by that name sold dental implants.
Indicted in February 2024, Nick's trial in Hinesville began with his defense attorney Doug Weinstein arguing he was duped by McIntyre, portraying Nick as a fearful veteran. Prosecutor Baio highlighted the forensics and deceptions, including Nick's failure to pay Heather $1.5 million from their divorce. Witnesses like Samantha and Heather testified to his betrayals. Nick denied killing or dismembering Mindi, claiming the knife was for home repairs.
The jury deliberated just over an hour, finding him guilty of malice and felony murder. Judge Charles Rose sentenced him to life without parole. Mindi's friend Morgan Paddock addressed him in court: "She loved you and trusted you to tell her the truth, to protect her... And yet you were the one that she needed protection from." Baio suggested the motive involved Nick's desire for children after learning Mindi was not pregnant, per her death certificate.
