The University of Northern Iowa Panthers secured four individual event victories on the first day of the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis. Carter Morton defended his titles in the men's long jump and high jump, while Josie Moreland and Joey Perry claimed wins in the women's high jump and pentathlon, respectively. The UNI men's team leads the standings, with the women in second place.
The championships began on Sunday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where UNI athletes excelled in multiple field events. Carter Morton, a 2025 NCAA All-American, won the men's long jump with a first-attempt leap of 24 feet, 10 inches, marking his second straight MVC indoor title in the event. He also cleared 6 feet, 11 inches to defend his high jump crown, with teammate Parker Kiwiet placing second at 24 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the long jump, Tye Hardin fourth at 23 feet, 8 1/4 inches, and T.Y. Pour sixth at 23 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
Josie Moreland repeated as women's high jump champion, clearing 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches on her second attempt. Joey Perry captured the women's pentathlon title, setting career-best marks in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump; this marks the third consecutive year a UNI athlete has won the event, following Katy Stephens in 2024 and 2025.
Other notable performances included Erica Miner finishing second in the women's pole vault at 13 feet, 3/4 inch in her conference debut, and Josey Dunbar taking third in the women's long jump at 19 feet, 5 1/2 inches. In the men's weight throw, Justin Olson placed third with 65 feet, 8 1/4 inches, David Russell fourth at 64 feet, 4 1/2 inches, and Carson Lienau fifth at 62 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Morton also leads the heptathlon after day one with 3,233 points, ahead of Hardin in third at 3,009 points and Colin Buch in tenth at 2,510 points; he narrowly missed another title, placing second in the pole vault at 17 feet, 3/4 inch.
On the track, Amelia Hill earned third in the women's 5,000 meters with 16:44.60, while Colin Lillie finished eighth in the men's race at 14:32.08. The men's distance medley relay team of Ethan Olds, Kaden Emmanuel, Micah Ellis, and Jonas VanDis placed third in 9:59.77, and the women's relay of Claire Wright, Eden Moore, Josee Simonson, and Evie Henneberry took fifth in 12:04.53.
UNI qualified athletes for 11 finals on Monday, including Emma Randecker leading the women's 400 meters prelims at 54.60 seconds and Parker Kiwiet second in the men's 400 meters at 47.40 seconds.
After day one, the UNI men top the team standings with 76.5 points, 22 ahead of Illinois State at 54.5. The UNI women sit second with 57 points, behind Indiana State at 75. Action resumes Monday at 8:30 a.m. CT, with coverage on ESPN+.
