Kane Parsons' directorial debut Backrooms opened strongly at the domestic box office this weekend. The A24 release, based on the filmmaker's popular YouTube series, earned between $76 million and $79 million.
The film follows a therapist who enters eerie liminal spaces to find a missing patient. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Avan Jogia and Lukita Maxwell. Parsons wrote the script with Will Soodik and began the project after creating a 22-video found-footage series on YouTube under the name Kane Pixels that has drawn more than 25 million views.
