Claudio Barrelier, the only person detained for the murder of the 14-year-old in Córdoba, attempted to take his own life at Bower prison. The incident came to light after the discovery of Agostina Vega's body in a vacant lot in the Ampliación Ferreyra neighborhood.
Barrelier, 32, a municipal employee, was assisted by prison staff and remains sedated. The judicial investigation continues to determine whether others were involved in the crime.
Prosecutor Raúl Garzón confirmed that Barrelier changed his account and admitted Agostina entered his home in the Cofico neighborhood. Security camera footage and cell tower data place the accused in the area where the body was found.
The victim's family expressed concern over the suicide attempt. Grandfather Miguel Vega called for Barrelier to state whether he had accomplices and for the case to be investigated as femicidio. Agostina's mother, Melisa Heredia, was informed of the discovery while recovering in a clinic.
