Actor Rui Rezende died on Sunday, July 12, at the age of 88. He had been hospitalized since July 2 at Hospital São Francisco na Providência de Deus in Tijuca.
Rezende had lived at Retiro dos Artistas in Rio de Janeiro since 2019. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Retiro dos Artistas confirmed the death in a statement on social media. "It is with deep sorrow that we bid farewell to Rui Rezende, one of the great names in Brazilian drama", the text reads.
Born in Araguari, Minas Gerais, he became known for playing professor Astromar Junqueira in the 1985 telenovela "Roque Santeiro". Other roles include Bob Lamb in "A História de Ana Raio e Zé Trovão" and Menandro Olinda in "Incidente em Antares".
Artists such as José de Abreu mourned the loss. "What sadness. A great human figure. Go in peace!", he wrote.
