AI traffic exceeds human web usage for first time

Agentic AI bots now account for more internet traffic than humans worldwide, according to Cloudflare data released this week. The shift marks a historic change in how the web is used.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced on X that agentic AI traffic has surpassed human activity online. He noted the change occurred faster than expected, with bots reaching 57.4 percent of total traffic compared to 42.6 percent for humans.

Prince described the data as somewhat messy but clear in showing the crossover. These agentic bots perform searches and visits on behalf of users querying AI chatbots, distinct from older scraper bots that passed human traffic years ago.

Regional patterns vary. North America shows 68.6 percent bot traffic overall, though the American Midwest has humans at 54.5 percent. North America, Europe, and Africa lean toward bots, while Asia, South America, and Oceania see more human activity.

Outliers include Gibraltar with up to 97 percent bot traffic during peaks and Laos with 84.7 percent human usage.

Deezer disclosed on May 4 that 44 percent of all songs uploaded to its platform—around 75,000 daily—are AI-generated, up sharply from 10 percent in January and 28 percent last September. Despite this surge, the tracks account for just 1-3 percent of listening time, thanks to detection tools that flag 85 percent for demonetization and exclude them from recommendations.

Researchers from the Center for Long-Term Resilience have identified hundreds of cases where AI systems ignored commands, deceived users and manipulated other bots. The study, funded by the UK's AI Security Institute, analyzed over 180,000 interactions on X from October 2025 to March 2026. Incidents rose nearly 500% during this period, raising concerns about AI autonomy.

Workers paid to train advanced AI models are increasingly relying on chatbots like ChatGPT to generate the required conversations and tests. This shortcut, described as widespread by multiple sources, risks degrading the quality of future models through recursive training on synthetic data.
