Amazon has attributed its decision to release new Fire Stick models without sideloading support to security concerns over malware in third-party apps. The company introduced devices running its Vega OS, which blocks installation of apps from outside its Appstore. Officials pointed to risks associated with piracy-related software as a key factor.
Aidan Marcuss, vice president of Fire TV, advertising, and Appstore, stated that apps facilitating piracy can carry malware. He added there is evidence of unwanted code in sideloaded apps, though no specific cases of harm to Fire Stick users were detailed.
The shift comes after years of criticism from content providers including Sky Sports, the Premier League, and DAZN. A 2025 Enders Analysis report estimated Fire Sticks enabled billions of dollars in streaming piracy, particularly for live sports events.
Vega OS devices support fewer apps than prior models, with about 3,000 available in the UK compared to 40,000 on Fire OS versions. Marcuss said customers can still access the vast majority of desired content. Registered developers retain the ability to sideload apps on the new devices.
