Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez Vicario has described how her ex-husband's handling of her finances left her bankrupt after an alleged $41 million fraud.
Sanchez Vicario, who won four Grand Slam singles titles and reached the top ranking in both singles and doubles, said her former husband Josep Santacana managed the roughly $41 million she earned during her career.
The couple married in 2008 and divorced in 2019. She told a Spanish television show that she trusted him completely with financial matters and had no knowledge of any wrongdoing.
In 2024 a court found the pair guilty of hiding assets to avoid debts to Banque de Luxembourg. Santacana received a prison sentence while Sanchez Vicario was given a suspended term and ordered to pay a 6.6 million euro fine.
She has maintained she is a victim and is now complying with repayment terms to avoid jail.
