Bachelet meets Bahraini foreign minister during UN candidacy tour

Former president Michelle Bachelet held a meeting with Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani as part of her campaign for the United Nations Secretary General post.

The meeting took place this Saturday in Bahrain, one of the ten non-permanent members of the UN Security Council until 2027. Bachelet and Alzayani discussed the Chilean former president's executive program to succeed António Guterres.

Bachelet highlighted the regional context on her social media: “In a moment of deep concern over the serious conflicts and tensions affecting the region, it was an opportunity to exchange views on the challenges facing the international community and reaffirm the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and multilateralism”.

According to Bahrain's Foreign Ministry, Alzayani expressed his best wishes for Bachelet's success and stressed the key role of the Secretary General in global development and the maintenance of peace. The visit is part of a tour that has already included stops in Latin America, Europe and Asia.
